How to purchase an inexpensive laptop

By Joanne Greco

There are many laptops currently on the market. As the cost of components has come down, and competition among brand names has become more fierce laptops have rapidly become more affordable.

Hardware components have also become exponentially more powerful in recent years, as a result even budget laptops are sufficient for the tasks most everyday users will be performing. When purchasing a laptop there are a few things to consider, aesthetics, performance, and reliability. Some of the nicest looking laptops are made by Apple, unfortunately they are also some of the most expensive. Even entry level Mac computers go for upwards of $1000.

HP’s new Envy series looks similar to the Macbook pro, and can be configured with higher quality components for a lower price. Remember that aesthetics are subjective but can have a large effect on how you perceive your laptop, check out models in store and find out what works for you. In general performance should not be an issue. However, if you’re looking to do high end gaming or video editing you’ll need a more powerful machine.

The length of this article isn’t sufficient to cover how to shop for a gaming laptop but one component that is vital is a quality discrete graphics card. Do your research and expect to spend a little more.

Reliability varies across brands, Lenovo and Dell’s business models are particularly well rated. As is generally the case across all brands, if you’re interested in purchasing a budget laptop from a name brand company look at their business models as opposed to their consumer models. They are generally comparable in price and offer higher quality components. For example if you’re looking at Dell Laptops focus on their Latitude series as opposed to the Inspiron series.

Take time while shopping, look out for deals at the end of summer for back to school and around the holidays. You should be able to get a solid entry level laptop for around $500. If you want more power or more impressive looks expect to spend closer to $1000. If both of those numbers look high to you consider netbooks, their smaller and slower but also much more affordable, some can be found for around two or three hundred dollars.
